The sniper is in an ideal tactical position to lead the team.  From an advantageous location, they can direct the attacks of their teammates while focusing in on individual targets through their scope.  The leader of team RWBY was not this kind of sniper.  Rather than directing attacks, Ruby Rose preferred the direct attack.  Instead of focusing on a single target from the end of a scope, she lost focus on all other enemies from a condition known as “tunnel vision.”  It helps that her high-impact sniper rifle, the Crescent Rose, was also half scythe.  Yeah.

“I don’t see what you are complaining about,” Ruby said, “we still won.  And we got this cool idol.”

“That’s not the point,” Weiss said, taking the eXChanGeR from her.  “Your lack of common sense put the rest of us in danger.  If I were the leader, things would have gone much better.”

“Well, you’re not me,” Ruby said as lightning struck.  It was a dark and stormy night.  The artifact glowed, and the white girl flailed her arms, losing balance and tumbling down the stairs with the other girl.  They hit heads with a crash that would send normal people to the hospital, but their anime physics prevented them from taking serious damage.

“This is what I’m talking about, Ruby,” Ruby said.  “You-“ she cut herself off and just stared.

“Ow, my head.  Huh?  Looks like I’m seeing myself.  Must have hit it really hard.”

“I need for you to stay calm when I tell you this.  We switched bodies,” Weiss said after a deep breath from Ruby’s body.  Ruby slowly looked down on Weiss’s body and promptly lost her calm.  “NOOOOO!”  They took no physical damage, but perhaps they would still suffer some emotional damage.  “Was it from when we fell down the stairs?  What if we’re stuck like this?  Let’s try to change back,” she said, trying to bump heads with herself.

“I said to stay calm.  People don’t switch bodies from falling down stairs.  I can’t believe such nonsense is coming out of my mouth.  Think about it.  Ancient idol.  Mysterious powers.  Probably just needs a little lightning to charge it.  As long as we have that, we should be able to change back.”

Ruby shifted uncomfortably.  “Yeah, about that…”

“Let me guess.  You dropped it, didn’t you?”

“Well, technically, you dropped it.”

“Then technically, I am the leader, and I say we split up and look for it.”

And so the gang split up.  At the bottom of the stairs, Ruby ran into Jaune.  Literally.  There was an explosion of Dust, and when the smoke settled, they had undergone some changes.  Jaune’s clothes were looser everywhere besides his hips and chest, where new curves pushed against his armor.  As he brushed his longer bangs out of his eyes to join the cascading orange locks on his back, he said “that’s the sort of thing I’d expect from…”  He—sorry—she coughed at the sound of her voice, and tried to finish an octave lower “…Ruby.  So, why am I a girl?  I know I was never too manly, but this is ridiculous.”

“Yeah, about that…”  Ruby said with the now-masculine Weiss voice.  “You didn’t happen to see an idol lying around here?”

“What, this thing?” she said, holding out an empty hand.  “Huh?  Where’d it go?”

“Ruby, did you find the idol?” Weiss asked as she came down the stairs.  “What did you do to my body?”  The changes really weren’t that much.  No hypermuscled macho here.  In fact, with the dress—sorry, combat skirt—and hair in a ponytail (although much shorter), he could still be mistaken for a girl, although not too easily.  “I would have expected more from a gender change.  I guess it’s because Jaune was always so girly anyways.”

“Hey!”

Just then, Yang and Blake came up the stairs with the idol.  “Did you guys drop this?”

Suddenly, the stairs seemed larger to Yang.  The idol had struck again.  She was shrinking, especially in the chest region, where she was deflating.  Meanwhile, Weiss was growing, as Ruby Rose’s body bloomed into full womanhood.

“That is so unfair,” Ruby said as she examined her old body.  It looked good, and looking made her feel good… in new ways.  Weiss blushed from the attention she was receiving from a male body, even if it used to be her own.  But then, she did look good now.  Things could be worse.

“So Yang is the younger sister now, Weiss is company heir, and Jaune is Jane,” Blake summarized sardonically.

“Joan,” Jaune corrected automatically before blushing and continuing in a whisper, “I… used to get called that.  A lot.”

“Still, I would have expected it to make Ruby the man since she’s such a tomboy.”

“Actually, I am Ruby,” Ruby said and Weiss explained further, “it switched our bodies.  And why would it matter who it changes if the swaps are random?  And why haven’t you exchanged anything with anyone?”

“I… read about it in a book?”  She answered evasively.  “It’s like a monkey’s paw.  Yeah.  It grants three wishes, but it does so in its own way.  Ruby and Weiss switched bodies, Jaune and Weiss switched genders, and Ruby and Yang switched ages; that's three.  It must have ran out of power.”  Behind her back, she crossed her fingers.  Ruby and Weiss exchanged eye colors.  Subtle.  The idol was powerless now, because it had traded its ability to switch attributes with Blake’s nonexistent magic.

This is going to be fun.
